Richard LAILLIER. Noires 145, 1999. Black stone drawing on c - Lot 57
Richard LAILLIER. Noires 145, 1999. Black stone drawing on cardboard, 22.7 x 14.2 cm. Signed, titled and dated on the back. Sade Prize 2012, category documents. "It starts with a large white space. The sheet of paper. This white, Richard Laillier attacks it with sandpaper, sanding it down, making it less smooth, more receptive. Then, with black stone, a kind of very dry and matte charcoal, reduced to powder, it blackens. With large circular gestures, using a cloth, the black material cancels the white of the paper. Total blackout. It is only in a third stage that Laillier will bring out shapes and lines from the paper, using an eraser. He removes the black, digs out, returns to the white, which was always there, hides. This technique, close to that of black matter in engraving, has been practiced for decades by Richard Laillier (1961), who lives and works in Paris. The blacks are deep, the matter dense and voluptuous. The whites are nothing more than memories, they take on shades of grey, beige and smoke. "http://galerie-audrey-marty.com/richard-laillier/
