Jean François MILLET (1814-1875) Woman giving food to her ch - Lot 72
Jean François MILLET (1814-1875) Woman giving food to her children, also known as La Becquée Mahogany panel 32 x 23,5 cm Unfortunately we do not have at the time of the closing of this catalogue any information from Mrs Alexandra Murphy concerning this painting. According to Alfred Sensier, Millet's first biographer "in April (1848), M. Ledru Rollin, pushed by Jeanron, came to see him and brought him an order from 1 800 francs. He found him sketching a Charity, then a canvas for the Republican competition" (Alfred Sensier and Paul Mantz, La vie et l'œuvre de Jean-François Millet, Paris, 1881, p. 107). We know of another sketch, also on wood, but of smaller dimensions, preserved in the Musée municipal d'Oran (exhibited at the Grand Palais in 1975). We do not know the final painting, if it ever existed. The influence of Daumier (who also contributed in 1848) is noticeable in the modelling, and one also perceives an echo of the figures of the Sistine Sybils in the profile presentation of the woman.
