Guy de LAURENCE [Erich GODAL]. Portfolio, 31 x 23 cm, containing 12 plates, one of which is glued to the cover, 22 x 15.3 cm. Vorzugsausgabe vom Kunsiler uberarbeitet handkoloriert und signiert numbered 95 in pencil [Special edition verified by the artist, hand-colored and signed]. Erich Goldbaum (1899-1969), also known as Erich or Eric Godal, also known as Guy de Laurence was a German cartoonist, caricaturist and illustrator. Godal started in 1919 as a poster artist and cartoonist in the magazine Der Orchideengarten. In 1920, he published the portfolio of the Revolution in the Berlin "Cooperative for Proletarian Art". He also worked for Simplicissimus, The Action and Owl. In 1933, after the Nazi takeover, he fled to Prague. There, he worked for various magazines: Prager Mittag, Deutsche Freiheit im Saarland, Arbeiter Illustrierte Zeitung and Simplicissimus. In 1935 he emigrated to the United States, where he founded the newspaper Star with Franz Höllering and worked for the Jewish exile newspaper Aufbau. Due to McCarthyism, he returned to Germany in 1954 and wrote for the press: Springer, Welt am Sonntag, the Hamburger Abendblatt and the Illustrierte Constanze. He also illustrated many books.
