Richard LAILLIER (born 1961). Second night, 1998. Black sto - Lot 133
Richard LAILLIER (born 1961). Second night, 1998. Black stone drawing on cardboard, 5 x 24 cm. Signed and dated in pencil on the reverse. Sade Prize 2012, category documents. "It starts with a big white space. The sheet of paper. Richard Laillier attacks this white space with sandpaper, sanding it, making it less smooth, more receptive. Then, with black stone, a kind of very dry and matt charcoal, reduced to powder, he blackens it. With large circular gestures, using a cloth, the black material cancels the white of the paper. Total blackout. It is only in a third step that Laillier will make shapes and lines emerge from the paper, using an eraser. He removes the black, digs, returns to the white, which was always there, hidden. This technique, similar to that of dark matter in engraving, has been practiced for decades by Richard Laillier, who lives and works in Paris. The blacks are deep, the matter dense and voluptuous. The whites are nothing but memories, they take on shades of grey, beige and smoke" http://galerie-audrey-marty.com/richard-laillier/
