François SCHMIED (1873-1941).12 original woodcuts, heightene - Lot 310
François SCHMIED (1873-1941).12 original woodcuts, heightened in color. Made for L'Odysée. Paris, Pierre Bellanger for the Compagnie des Bibliophiles de l'Automobile club de France, 1929-1933. First edition of Victor Bérard's translation, which restores for the first time the theatrical character of Homer's text. The set was designed with the collaboration of Gustave Miklos, engraved on wood by Théo Schmied and coloured with stencils by Jean Saudé, with gold and silver highlights. The typographical printing is due to Darantière. This is a sumptuous edition, with a planned print run of 145 copies on vellum. It is known that the high cost of this publication, which required more than two years of work and, it is said, 3,000 goats from the High Atlas for the parchments, was the reason for the small number of copies printed, around 73, to which were added a few copies of collaborators. Some boxwood cubes are glued into them, others are not.
