Kimbei KUSAKABE, known as KIMBEI (1841-1934). Toilet room and Dressing room, end of the 19th century. 2 heightened silver prints, 21 x 26,5 cm, mounted on cardboard, 25 x 32 cm. Kimbei Kusakabe is a Japanese photographer. He was usually called by his first name, Kimbei, because his foreign clients found his first name easier to pronounce than his name. Kimbei Kusakabe was a colorist and assistant to Felice Beato and Baron Raimund von Stillfried before opening his own studio in Yokohama in 1881. He then opened a branch studio in the Ginza district of Tokyo. Around 1885, he bought the negatives of Beato and Stillfried, as well as those of Kuichi Uchida and some of Hikoma Ueno. He stopped his photographic activity in 1912-1913. Most of his albums, like this one, are accordion mounted.
