Arthur GREUELL (1891-1966). Manifest indecency, circa 1935. Oil on cardboard, 47 x 31 cm. Signed lower left. This symbolist painter studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels from 1905 to 1909, then in Paris in 1913-1914, where he was a pupil of Louis Anquetin, but was rather influenced by Van Dongen or his friend Edouard Goerg. Back in Belgium, he devoted himself to illustration, producing etchings for Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal and Pierre Louÿs' Les Chansons de Bilitis, among others. Greuell settled permanently in Paris in 1932 where he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne from 1936 and at the Salon des Tuileries, as well as in Los Angeles, The Hague, Prague, Venice, etc.
