Volume in-12 of 70 pages and 1 f.n.ch., brown half-brown wedge-shaped grief, spine with decorated nerves, speckled head, untrimmed, cover preserved (modern binding). Original etching frontispiece by Félicien Rops. Small edition, printed on laid paper. Original edition of the preface and first volume edition. This one-act play was first published in La Revue Fantaisiste of 15 May 1861. In his preface, Mendès tells how this short play, which was never performed, earned him his stay in prison. Rare declared publication of the famous Henriette Doucé, Jean Gay's associate for many clandestine editions. Rops was not insensitive to her charms...
