[Achilles Deveria and friends]. Doors & windows, circa 1850. - Lot 222
[Achilles Deveria and friends]. Doors & windows, circa 1850. 8 romantic lithographs in colour, system, various formats. If it is true that the obscene image is not a creation of the Romantic period, what is new is the abundance and quality of illustrators who compromise themselves by hijacking their tools in the service of pornography. Nineteenth-century booksellers refer to these anonymous people as "Devéria and her school". Alfred de Lostalot, editor of the Gazette des Beaux-Arts, denounces: "Devéria, for his part, lavished himself in all genres, which is not without damaging his talent and reputation. "Devéria was appointed Curator and later Cabinet of Prints and Drawings at the Imperial Library at the end of his life. Among the multitude of licentious supports, the romantic pornographic lithography remains the most refined obscene image, all the more so because - a unique fact in the whole history of Erotic Art - it is not the conception of an isolated artist with inspired fantasies but of a true movement, united and concerted. The a priori that makes us apprehend the Romantics as vaporous, outdated and obsolete young people is in a bad way, when we discover them rather provocative, ardent, lustful and lecherous, vigorous heirs of the emancipatory values of the Age of Enlightenment.
