Pierre-Jean de BÉRANGER. Complete works of P.-J. de Béranger - Lot 252
Pierre-Jean de BÉRANGER. Complete works of P.-J. de Béranger. Tome V. Supplement [Erotic Songs]. Paris, chez tous les marchands de nouveautés, 1834. Volume in-8, 227 x 150 mm, of 178 pages (paginated 8-178), on wove paper, half-marocco, long-grain plum, with corners underlined with a gilt fillet, spine ribbed and decorated in cold gold, natural edges. (antique binding). Illustrated with a frontispiece in 3 states by Félicien Rops, 24 engravings by Henry Monnier, Tony Johannot and others, and an original drawing. Partly original edition, intended to complete the 4-volume Perrotin edition of 1834 of the Works of Béranger. At the bottom of page 179, there is this indication, probably fallacious according to Pia: "Imprimerie de Petit, rue Saint-Denis, n° 380". This volume V, unlike the other volumes, was only sold under the mantle and was seized and condemned to destruction by a ruling of the Cour d'assises de la Seine (Court of Assizes of the Seine) on 24 October 1834. The names of the printers involved in this trial were Chantepie father and son, not Petit. Part of Béranger's Chansons érotiques had already appeared in a collection in 1829. A copy enriched with Rops' frontispiece for the 1864 Poulet-Malassis edition of Béranger's Gaietés, the complete suite in double print of the 8 free figures after Tony Johannot for the 1833 edition preceded by two other engravings (Le Roi d'Yvetot and La Bacchante), of 4 coloured lithographs taken from two different suites by Henry Monnier, as well as 2 other anonymous lithographs in a colour paper montage with added captions, and an original gouache drawing. Past spine. Provenance: Bibliothèque érotique Gérard Nordmann, 2nd part, Christie's Paris, 14 and 15 December 2006, lot n°79. (Pia 207, G*** 210 and 211, Dutel A-789)
