[George MORLAND (1763-1804), in the spirit of]. The Complian - Lot 179
[George MORLAND (1763-1804), in the spirit of]. The Compliant Handmaid, circa 1780. One fixed under oval glass, 33.5 x 26 cm, hidden behind a framed glass, 39 x 31 cm, by a door that has disappeared. The hinge remains. Broken in two places, without this accident affecting the understanding of the painting. Fixing under glass is a rare process, and even rarer when it comes to illustrating pornography. This difficult and meticulous artistic technique is carried out directly on the glass plate. The glass serves as a support as would a canvas. Fixed to the glass, it is through this support that one contemplates the work. Thus the glass serves both as a support and as a protective varnish. It is a "cold" painting technique so that the process does not require baking in an oven. The pigment is bound to the glass by a varnish.
