Gaston SMIT, James BARCLAY. Scènes de flagellation et domina - Lot 193
Gaston SMIT, James BARCLAY. Scènes de flagellation et domination, circa 1925. 5 original drawings, in pencil and gouache, for publication, about 35 x 25 cm. Joint : 4 colour lithographs, 32 x 23 cm, titled and signed in pencil by G. Topfer. This prolix illustrator using several signatures has managed to remain anonymous until today. However, Nathalie Quirion, one of the best specialists in this field, has decided: "Gaston Smit, also known under the pseudonyms of Georges Topfer and James Barclay, is an illustrator about whom little is known. We assume that his real name is Gaston Smit since it is under this name that he illustrated novels of passion for the publisher Albin Michel. Smit is best known for his sadomasochistic illustrations for the following publishers: Amateur-Biblio, Curio, l'Édition Parisienne, les Éditions P. Brenet, the Éditions Prima, the Éditions Jean Fort, the Librairie Artistique, the Librairie Artistique and Édition Parisienne réunies and the Librairie Franco-Anglaise. This artist, possibly French, was active mainly from 1919 to 1933. It is not excluded that he may have published earlier illustrations in newspapers or magazines, but we found no trace of this.
