[Jean-Pierre MOET]. Code of Kythera, or bed of justice of lo - Lot 271
[Jean-Pierre MOET]. Code of Kythera, or bed of justice of love, Erotopolis [Paris], in the house of the god Harpocrates, under the sign of the night, 7746 [1746]. Volume in-12 of 81 pages. The text is followed by La Folie precepteur ou l'art de ne pas penser, trifle à la mode, ornamented with vaudevilles, À Londres, 1753, in-16 of 44 pages. Marbled calf, ornate smooth spine, marbled edges (binding c. 1780). First edition of this utopian programme, entirely coded, for the elaborate regulation of prostitution, delivered by Cupid himself. Published anonymously, it was attributed to Jean-Pierre Moet (1721-1806), Minister of State and Secretary to the Count of Saint-Florentin, who wrote a few books and translated several others from Latin and English into French, and was notably the translator of Swedenborg's writings. Tired binding, blunt corners, more or less wet at the top of many of the leaves.
