Alphonse Berty is a French writer, author of Sodom (1888) and Gomorrah (1889) under the pseudonym Henry d'Argis. Published with a preface by Paul Verlaine, Sodom is considered the first homosexual novel. It was written from 1886 to 1888 between Mons and Paris: "You shall not have female intercourse with a male", says the Bible. What could be more chaste and less disturbing than this brutal and savage sentence? Is it not the model, in its simplicity so explicit, of the psychologist of the shameful psychologists? Unnatural vices are like decomposed carrion that its acrid smell and purulent appearance protects from the scalpel. The study of them is formidable; to be healthy, it must be abrupt and courageous; to avoid being dangerous, it must refrain from prudence and reticence. These lines will perhaps sufficiently explain a conception that could be called the Naturalism of thought. "Henry d'Argis, Sodom, pages 5 and 6, Provenance: Pierre Loti Library.
