Pierre LOUŸS (1870-1925). Zohra Ben Brahim exhibits, 1897. S - Lot 341
Pierre LOUŸS (1870-1925). Zohra Ben Brahim exhibits, 1897. Silver print made around 1910-1920 from the original glass negative by Pierre Louÿs, 8 x 8 cm. Pierre Louÿs met Zohra ben Brahim in Algiers in March 1897. She posed a lot for him and became his mistress. He made with her many shots in Algeria. He said of her: "You cannot imagine how brown she is, you see: and it is pretty, on the white sheets, the body of a woman in chocolate. "(Letter from Pierre Louÿs to Claude Debussy, Algiers, April 15, 1897). He photographed her in her usual attitudes, almost without a pose: her total availability to love, her nonchalant and oriental grace were for him the incarnation of eroticism. He welcomed Zohra in Paris at 147 Boulevard Malesherbes in May 1897 until December 1897, when she returned to Algiers. This type of silver print often accompanies older prints made by Louÿs. The Velox paper was invented in 1893 by Leo Hendrik Baekeland, registered by the Eastman Kodak Company in 1899.
