Eugène CHATELAIN, active between 1898 and 1930. Nude study, - Lot 356
Eugène CHATELAIN, active between 1898 and 1930. Nude study, circa 1910. Vintage silver print, paper in the vat, 18 x 13 cm. Dry stamp. This unknown artist, both photographer and painter, would have arrived in Tunis around 1898 and would have worked in the workshops of Photo-Garrigues. In 1903, he continued to take pictures in the small Moorish palace 13, rue El Gamathou, in Tunis and in 1913 he obtained a silver medal in 1913, the most important Tunisian distinction at the time. We sometimes find the same models as Lehnert and pictures of Lehnert taken in Chatelain's patio. In 1914, he leaves for Algeria and collaborates with other photographers. Around 1915, part of his collection is taken over by the publishers Léon and Lévy, without indicating Chatelain's copyright. Bibliography: Nicole Canet. Chatelain retrouver, photographer in Tunis, 1903-1914, Au Bonheur du Jour, 2006, page 79.
