[MALFIATRE (Jacques-Charles-Louis CLINCHAMPS de)] Narcissus - Lot 249
[MALFIATRE (Jacques-Charles-Louis CLINCHAMPS de)] Narcissus in the island of Venus. In Paris, at Lejay's, (1769). In-8 (188 x 127 mm) of 1 engraved title page, x, 112 pages and 4 figures, brown calf, spine ribbed. One corner is missing. Wear of time (contemporary binding). Original edition. Illustrated here in the first edition with a title page with allegorical decoration after Charles Eisen engraved by de Ghendt and 4 off-text figures of Gabriel Saint-Aubin engraved by Massard (the 3rd one is not signed). One recognizes everywhere in this work a charming naturalness, an easy and harmonious poetry, a strong and light touch, an infinite art of bending to all tones, an admirable and simple link in the stories; finally, everything that constitutes a beautiful poem. We dare to say that this one can be proposed as a model of taste, and that there are few works of this kind in our language that can be compared to it''.
