ANONYMOUS]. The New Academy of Ladies, or History of Mlle de - Lot 278
ANONYMOUS]. The New Academy of Ladies, or History of Mlle de B***, D. C. D. L. [called Countess de Launay]. In Cythère, 1774. In-12 of 113 pages, marbled calf, triple fillet around the boards, smooth spine decorated, cap and corners dull, red edges, one endpaper partly detached (period binding). Illustrated with 3 engravings (out of 4) and enriched with an original proof on salted paper attributable to Auguste BELLOC (1800-1867). Fleeing her father's perversities, Miss Brion takes refuge in the Verne brothel. This benevolent madam will sell her virginity and introduce her to the myth of love. Clandestine publications prior to the revolutionary period are rare and must be considered independently of the editions of the late eighteenth century. According to Guillaume Apollinaire, in his preface to the "Bibliothèque des curieux" of 1913: "The good tone that reigns in this work still gives it a special place in the literature of morals in the eighteenth century, a literature so rich that it would easily serve us to reconstitute the history of the time, if even the original documents and archives were to disappear.
