Pierre-Jean de BÉRANGER. Complete works of P.-J. de Béranger - Lot 320
Pierre-Jean de BÉRANGER. Complete works of P.-J. de Béranger. Tome V. Supplément [Chansons érotiques]. Paris, chez tous les marchands de nouveautés, 1834. In-8, 227 x 150 mm, of 178 pages (paginated 8-178), on wove paper, half plum-coloured long-grained morocco, corners underlined with a gilt fillet, spine with nerves decorated with a cold and gilt decoration, natural edges (old binding). Illustrated with a frontispiece in 3 states by Félicien Rops, 24 engravings by Henry Monnier, Tony Johannot and others, and an original drawing. Partly original edition, intended to complete the Perrotin edition of 1834 in 4 volumes of Béranger's works. At the bottom of page 179 appears this indication, probably spurious according to Pia: "Imprimerie de Petit, rue Saint-Denis, n° 380" This volume V, contrary to the other volumes, was only sold under the table and was seized and condemned to destruction by a decision of the Court of Assizes of the Seine rendered on October 24, 1834 The names of the printers involved in this trial were Chantepie père and fils, not Petit. A part of Béranger's Chansons érotiques had already appeared in a collection in 1829. Copy enriched with the frontispiece by Rops for the Poulet-Malassis edition of 1864 of Les Gaietés de Béranger, the complete suite in double edition of the 8 free figures after Tony Johannot for the 1833 edition preceded by two other engravings (Le Roi d'Yvetot and La Bacchante), 4 coloured lithographs from two different suites by Henry Monnier, as well as 2 other anonymous lithographs in a coloured paper mount with added captions, and an original gouache drawing. Spine faded. Provenance: Gérard Nordmann Erotic Library, 2nd part, Christie's Paris, 14 and 15 December 2006, lot n°79. Pia 207, G*** 210 and 211, Dutel A-789.
