Edme-Pierre BALZAC (1710-1781) Real pair of silver candlesticks. The base is curved with six points and six hollows rising from six mouldings called ''crossbows'' with five levels. The shaft, with cut sides on six sides surmounting hems, is joined in its upper part by cut parchments revealing an alternating pattern of concave shells continuing on a filleted motif. A wider sheath with cut sides completes the decoration. The moulded spigot gives way to a scalloped spool. Hallmark of the Master-goldsmith EBP, Paris 1751-1756, letter date O and guarantee punched several times. Monogrammed ERS and engraved " CM à Coulon sous la base ". Edme-Pierre Balzac was awarded the title of Master Goldsmith in 1739 and was the king's preferred goldsmith. He was one of the most prestigious French goldsmiths of the 18th century.
