Entourage of Marie-Denise LEMOINE (1774-1821) - Lot 162
Entourage of Marie-Denise LEMOINE (1774-1821) Portrait of a young girl with a cat, around 1810 Canvas 46,5 x 39,5 cm On the frame, on the reverse, an old label of MARCHAND, 15, rue Neuve des Petits Champs. The technical aspect of the work, whether in the depth of her gaze, the freshness of her face, her childlike expression and the softness of her hands, is a work of great artistic sensitivity in the vein of the women painters of the early 19th century, such as the Lemoine sisters, or their cousin Jeanne Élizabeth Chaudet (1761-1832), a specialist in children's scenes. However, it is also interesting to underline the very theatrical and symbolic aspect of the work, whether it be by the presence of this "wild cat", synonymous with mischief and coquetry, or by the strength of the contrast between the red of the coat, and the paleness of the child's clothing and flesh. These aspects, and the very pronounced character of a 19th century painting, tend to bring our portrait closer to the work of painters such as Pauline Auzou (1875-1835) or Louis Léopold Boilly (1742-1845). The sensitivity that emanates from our portrait of a young girl seems to announce the future beauty of the subject, undoubtedly from the wealthy environment of the Empire nobility.
