Pierre Olivier Joseph Coomans (1816-1889) Discussion January 24, 1883 Oil on cardboard Titled and dated 17 x 12 cm (on view) Insolated Work belonging to the series of Pompeian studies putting in place a conversation between three characters. The setting is a balcony overlooking a garden. What seems to be a harmless scene allows the artist to practice the antique decor and to build a symbolism in the message and gestures of the characters. Indeed, the oldest person, on the left, is leaning against the railing and seems to be the most composed, listening to the words of the person on the right, who is moving. In the centre, the child, dressed as a Dionysus, seems to be screaming.
