Rare cup in green glazed stoneware with the big arms of Henr - Lot 225
Rare cup in green glazed stoneware with the big arms of Henri IV encircled by the royal orders and roses, emblems of the monarch. La Chapelle des Pots, Saintonge, late 16th or early 17th century. Diameter: 16,5 cm; Height: 4,2 cm This exceptional piece was probably made in small series as a diplomatic gift for foreign courts and families close to the king. Several similar cups can be found in public collections, notably the one in the collections of the Musée des Beaux Arts de Lyon, from the Arconati-Visconti family (Inv E 538-20), as well as the one in the collection of the of the Museum of Saintes (Inv 87.12.1). The characteristics of the Saintongean production of the XVIIth century are at the same time a research of the colors, lively and varied, but also the art of the moulding treated with the greatest perfection. The mould of this piece is preserved in the National collections of the Museum of Ceramics in Sevres.
