Tortoiseshell plaque carved in bas-relief representing the W - Lot 32
Tortoiseshell plaque carved in bas-relief representing the Wedding of Psyche and Cupid. Flanders, early 17th century L. : 28,5 cm - H. : 21 cm (accidents and restorations) The iconography of the wedding of Psyche and Cupid is the representation of the union of the soul (Psyche) with divine love (Cupid). A fresco of Raphael, in the loggia of Psyche in the Villa Farnésina in Rome was taken again by the engraver Bernardo Daddi (1512-1570) known as the Master with the Dice. This engraving inspired numerous representations as can be seen on a dish by Pierre Courteys in painted enamel preserved in the Louvre museum (inv 1341)
