Richard LAILLIER (born 1961). Second night, 1998. Black ston - Lot 187
Richard LAILLIER (born 1961). Second night, 1998. Black stone drawing on cardboard, 15 x 24 cm. Signed and dated in pencil on the reverse. Sade Prize 2012, category documents. "It starts with a big white space. The sheet of paper. This white, Richard Laillier attacks it with sandpaper, he sands it, makes it less smooth, more receptive. Then, with black stone, a kind of very dry and matte charcoal, reduced to powder, he blackens it. With large circular gestures, using a cloth, the black material cancels the white of the paper. Total blackout. It is only in a third time that Laillier will make emerge forms and tracings of the paper, using an eraser. He removes the black, digs, returns to the white, which was always there, hidden. This technique, similar to that of dark matter in engraving, has been practiced for decades by Richard Laillier, who lives and works in Paris. The blacks are deep, the matter dense and voluptuous. The whites are only memories, they take on shades of gray, beige, smoke. " http://galerie-audrey-marty.com/richard-laillier/
