[Pierre LOUŸS - Marcel STOBBAERTS]. Pibrac, expanded edition - Lot 342
[Pierre LOUŸS - Marcel STOBBAERTS]. Pibrac, expanded edition with numerous watercolors. London, 1933 [Marcel Seheur, Paris]. In-8 square in ff. of 91 pages including 2 bl. ff., the false title and the title, 2 ff.n.ch. for the justification. Dark blue half-chagrin, spine ribbed, natural head and edges, cover preserved. Illustrated with 11 (out of 12) hors-texte enhanced in color by Marcel Stobbaerts. Limited edition of 175 copies on tinted vellum. According to Sarane Alexandrian (Histoire de la littérature érotique, Seghers, 1989, p. 296) : " Pybrac was written after Pierre Louÿs' quarrel with the senator Bérenger, president of the Ligue contre la licence des rues, who had a scene from La Femme et le Pantin (adaptation of his novel) banned from the Antoine theater in December 1910, because the dancer Régina Badet showed her naked breasts. This father of modesty even wanted to sue the great actor Gémier, director of this theater. Pierre Louÿs mocked the senator Bérenger in his Pybrac, a series of blames that a puritan addresses to the sexual aberrations. Here the scholar refers to the Quatrains du seigneur de Pibrac, one hundred and thirty-seven moralizing quatrains by a magistrate of Toulouse, Raoul du Faur, which were taught to schoolchildren in the old days. Each of Louÿs' quatrains begins with "I do not like to see" and describes an abomination, the whole forming a catalog of impurities." Dutel 2196.
