[Achille DEVÉRIA and his friends]. Doors & windows, circa 18 - Lot 407
[Achille DEVÉRIA and his friends]. Doors & windows, circa 1850. 4 romantic lithographs in color, with system, various sizes. Pitting. If it is true that the obscene image is not a creation of the Romantic period, what is new is the abundance and the quality of the illustrators who compromise themselves by diverting their tools to the service of pornography. The booksellers of the 19th century called these anonymous artists "Devéria and her school". Alfred de Lostalot, editor of the Gazette des Beaux-Arts, denounced: "Devéria, himself, lavished himself in all genres, which is not without having done harm to his talent and his reputation. Devéria was named Curator and then Head of the Cabinet des Estampes of the Imperial Library at the end of his life. Among the multitude of licentious supports, the romantic pornographic lithography remains the most refined obscene image, especially since - a unique fact in the history of Erotic Art - it is not the conception of an isolated artist with inspired fantasies, but of a true movement, united and concerted. The preconceived idea that makes us apprehend the Romantics as vapid, obsolete and outdated young people is found in a bad way, when we discover them rather provocative, ardent, lewd and eccentric, vigorous heirs of the emancipating values of the Enlightenment.
