Marie LAURENCIN (1883-1956), painter. Silver print, 12.8 x 8.2 cm. Mention in pencil of Marie Laurencin à Clavary (circa 1928) on verso. Château de Clavery in Auribeau-sur-Siagne near Grasse, Alpes-Maritimes, was once owned by painter Russel GREELEY, circa 1930. A Harvard graduate, he acquired Château de Clavary in 1925. The Boston-born artist lived there happily with his friend François de Gouy d'Arcy. Together, they entertained the intelligentsia of the 20th century. In an autobiography published in 1932, the English painter Nina Hamnett recalls the place: "The first time, I thought I was entering paradise. "She recalls Stravinsky's visit and their caviar tasting, or Poulenc's stay, which was particularly conducive to composition. The list of guests at Clavary until 1938 is dizzying: Brancusi, van Dongen, Marie Laurencin, Fernand Léger, Man Ray, Picabia, Dunoyer de Segonzac, Isadora Duncan, Cocteau, Max Jacob and Paul Valéry.
