LIBERATION. MAQUIS DES GLIÈRES. WW2. Live free or die. Tricolor fabric armband, motto embroidered in yellow, Phyrgian cap and cross of Lorraine embroidered, illegible seal and buckle closure. This was the motto of the Maquis des Glières resistance fighters. It was Alphonse Métral who, a few years earlier, while passing the 1870-1871 war memorial every day on his way to work, suggested this motto to Tom Morel, leader of the Maquis des Glières. In the winter of 1944, a group of resistance fighters from the Secret Army, made up of soldiers and maquisards, joined by Spanish republicans and then FTPs, climbed to the Glières plateau to receive parachuted weapons, where they remained for two months.
