AVANT-GARDE COMMUNISTE. U.J.R.F. Union de la Jeunesse Républicaine de France. Tricolor fabric armband with embroidered tricolor crest. As its name suggests, the Union des Jeunes Républicaines de France (U.J.R.F.) aimed to bring together as many young people as possible at the time of the Liberation, under a label that was sufficiently vague to avoid offending them. In fact, its leadership had close ties with the Communist Party. In the immediate post-war period, the U.J.R.F. succeeded in bringing together between five and six hundred thousand boys and girls. At the time, the U.J.R.F. had chosen Édouard Herriot as its honorary president, and sat alongside other youth movements at meetings of the U.P.O.J. (Union patriotique des organisations de jeunesse).
