Manufattura di Signa, (follower of) Rectangular gilded patinated bronze inkwell or box, decorated on the lid with centaurs and virgins holding a shield encircled by scrolls and, on the sides, with medusa heads alternating with female figures riding centaurs and framing a shield emblazoned with a lyre surmounting an undulating sea. 19th century, in the style of the Italian Renaissance. Size: 20 x 19 x 11 cm This inkwell is strongly inspired by models by Severo da Ravenna, such as the one that belonged to the Viscontis and is currently in the Louvre under number OA 6941. Another example of this model, listed in the Metropolitan Museum under number 1975.1.1398, was made in the 19th century and features the Medici coat of arms.
